[00:01.47]Passage 9 Albert Einstein[00:06.74]Now, listening to the passage.[00:10.15]Albert Einstein was born in Germany in 1879.[00:15.19]His father owned a factory that made electrical devices.[00:19.52]His mother enjoyed music and books.[00:23.22]His parents were Jewish but they did not observe many of the religion's rules.[00:29.71]Albert was a quite child who spent much of his time alone.[00:35.30]He was slow to talk and had difficulty learning to read.[00:40.56]When Albert was five years old, his father gave him a compass.[00:46.53]The child was filled with wonder when he discovered[00:50.76]that the compass needle always pointed in the same direction--to the north.[00:57.26]He asked his father and his uncle what caused the needle to move.[01:02.71]Their answers about magnetism and gravity were difficult for the boy to understand.[01:10.82]Yet he spent a lot of time thinking about them.[01:15.33]He said later that he felt something hidden had to be behind things.
